Yvette responds to damning report on special educational needs and disabilities support
A damning report published today by the Education Select Committee says that children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities are being badly let down and not getting the support they deserve.
They are right and it will come as no surprise to the countless parents in Normanton, Pontefract, Castleford and Knottingley who I’ve spoken to who face huge struggles trying to get their child access to the right support. It’s not fair. Every child deserves thebest start in life.
Families who are already overstretched or facing difficulty should not have to wade through endless bureaucracy fighting for a good education for their child. They should be properly supported.
The Government’s failure to properly implement and oversee its reforms has left local authorities under huge pressure, schools struggling to cope and families in crisis. The Tory Government has also cut a shocking £1.2 billion from SEN funding since 2015 alone.
That’s why I’ve been campaigning to get more funding for SEND education so all our children can get the support they need to help them throughout their lives.
