Yvette Cooper MP
Normanton Immigration Event
In the June referendum the majority of people across Britain and in this area voted to leave the EU. The result must be respected; that’s why I voted in Parliament to support triggering Article 50 by the end of March this year.
As part of the Brexit negotiation, immigration rules are likely to change but so far the Government has not consulted anyone on what the new rules should be. Some Government Ministers are arguing that Britain should continue with free movement, other Ministers are arguing that there should be hardly any immigration at all. But I want to know what you think.
Personally I have long argued for changes to free movement. I think immigration is important for Britain but that's why it needs to be controlled and managed so the system is fair. But I want to know what you think about different kinds of immigration (eg students, doctors coming to work in our NHS, low skilled immigration, illegal immigration) and what new rules we should be arguing for.
I believe we need a serious public debate across the country on what the new immigration rules should be and I have organised for the Parliamentary Home Affairs Committee that I chair to hold public meetings across the country to discuss detailed options.
As part of that I'm holding a meeting here in Normanton and I’d love it if you’d come along and have your say. It's a chance to have a sensible, thoughtful discussion about what kinds of immigration rules we should have in the future to benefit Britain - and what we want out of the Brexit negotiations.
