Campaigning to stop Nursery closing this summer has paid off.

March 05, 2019 1:23 PM

Great relief at Harewood Centre Nursery School that all our campaigning to stop it closing this summer has paid off. The Government is cutting the budget for maintained nurseries like Harewood, but after all our pressure, parents petitions and campaigns, the Minister was forced to announce some extra money yesterday to fill the gap this year.

It’s a first step and the headteacher Becky Cook, staff and parents I spoke to at Harewood are really relieved. It would be a travesty if Harewood closed due to Governement cuts when it provides vital support for parents and families as well as the children. It’s why Cllr David Jones and I have been campaigning so hard and including getting Labour’s education team to visit Harewood and raise it in Parliament too.

But this is only the start. Now it’s time for Ministers to sort out a long term funding plan so that we don’t have to go through this all again later in the year.

Why I Can’t Support the Prime Minister’s Brexit Deal

November 17, 2018 9:58 AM

What a mess. The Prime Minister’s deal has lost support from all sides. For me a blindfold Brexit deal where we know so little about the future security and economic cooperation is too risky so I will vote against it. But whilst Theresa May’s deal doesn’t work, we cannot countenance no deal at all.  For the sake of people across the country who no matter how they voted will be feeling let down by the chaos, it is time for Parliament, the Government and the EU to pause for breath and think again.

Keir Starmer has rightly said Labour MPs can’t sign up to anything if we don’t know where it is heading. The political declaration accompanying the Withdrawal Agreement on the long term relationship with the EU is just 7 pages long. If we leave with so little agreement on the future, our negotiating hand in those long term negotiations will be that much weaker too.

Yvette backs local residents in opposition to Rudd Quarry extension

May 14, 2018 12:05 PM

The proposed extension to Rudd Quarry in Altofts should be stopped. It is far too close to Altofts primary school and the objections in terms of dust, noise, flooding and safety far outweigh any potential benefits for the company. You can read more details on my objections here.

Yvette visits Haribo in Castleford

September 08, 2017 11:34 AM

Haribo is a really important local employer for us as well as a success story across the country - so it is great to see them expanding and creating more local jobs. We have a long tradition of confectionary in this area and the new Haribo investment in Whitwood as well as Pontefract makes that stronger than ever. It was great to see the new facilities and talk about skills and training as well as the new jobs they are creating

Action needed on street drinking in Castleford

Action needed on street drinking in Castleford

Castleford needs the same powers as Pontefract and Wakefield to stop problem street drinking in the town. Support my petition for action here.

Residents and shop workers shouldn't have to put up with anti-social behaviour linked to street drinking that has grown in Castleford town centre. It's completely unfair.

That's why I've called for a "Public Spaces Protection Order" for Castleford town centre which would mean our neighbourhood police could step in to stop people getting drunk in the street - Pontefract and Wakefield already have these powers, we need them in Castleford too. Wakefield Council have said they will put forward plans for a PSPO and they are asking for people's views. But we need to show that these plans have strong backing across our town. So please sign my petition if you agree.

This problem has grown and it's not fair on people shopping, living and working in our town centre - so we also need stronger action to prevent problem street drinking in the first place.

Yvette Re-elected as MP for Normanton, Pontefract, Castleford and Knottingley

June 13, 2017 11:31 AM

A massive thank you to people across Normanton, Pontefract, Castleford and Knottingley who re-elected me to Parliament yesterday for the sixth time. It is a real honour and privilege to represent our towns and I am determined to keep up the fight for jobs and public services in our area. I am also really grateful to all the brilliant local Labour Party members and supporters who helped with the campaign.

Cuts to Education in Our Area

April 14, 2017 1:23 PM

I'm not sure if Parliament has ever seen children dancing Gangnam style in its corridors before, but that's what I ended up doing with pupils from St Joseph's Castleford when they visited Parliament this week. We had a great discussion about how the House of Commons works, and how new laws are made but when the last question was about Strictly, none of us could resist having a quick go.
