Following the sad passing of former Pontefract and Castleford MP Lord Geoff Lofthouse, Yvette Cooper MP paid tribute to her predecessor, saying:
“Geoff's faith was very important to him.
“When I saw him ten days before he died we talked about the church, his family who meant more than anything in the world to him, and also about politics.
“As always he had a warm chuckle about local machinations, and wise words to offer about national tribulations.
“He fought so hard for this area - be it for Pontefract hospital or the miners he worked alongside.
“He had the authority to command a rowdy House of Commons, and the humility to listen with respect to anyone who talked to him in the street. And wherever he was he always had that ability to see through nonsense.
“I never really told Geoff how much I appreciated his personal kindness - though I'm sure he knew.
“When we talked, he told me that because of his strong faith he was ready to go. That doesn't make it any easier for the rest of us to lose him.
“We remember the things he did to help each and every one of us. And we miss him.”
