Yvette urges people to respond to leisure services consultation

Yvette is urging people across the Five Towns to respond to the Council’s plans for leisure services.

Announced last month, the plans will include a new leisure centre with pool and fitness facilities at Pontefract Park and the closure of pools in Pontefract, Knottingley and Castleford.

There has been controversy because leisure centres in Castleford and Knottingley will close before Christmas, years before the estimated completion of the new facility.

A consultation is currently taking place to find out the views of local people. It closes on Wednesday 9th November and the MP wants as many people to respond and make their voices heard.

The consultation can be found at http://www.wakefield.gov.uk/about-the-council/have-your-say/five-towns-leisure-consultation

Yvette said:

Over the last six years the Government has cut Wakefield Council’s budget by over £185m and we’re seeing the consequences of that. But I’m really concerned about what the plan means for our towns. The deadline is next Wednesday 9th November and it’s really important that Councillors know what people think before making the final decision.

I've been meeting with local groups to come up with alternative options and I think these closure plans are far too fast. We need time for everyone to work together to keep the pools and leisure centre open.
