Back Lord Alf Dubs' amendment to help child refugees

Alf_Dubs.jpg

On Monday 21st March the House of Lords is set to vote on whether to help 3,000 child refugees on their own in Europe.

Save the Children estimate there are some 26,000 lone child refugees in Europe. Some have been separated from their parents by war, others have been orphaned, all of these children are at serious risk of exploitation, sexual violence, disease and cold.

At the beginning of this year a 15 year old boy, Masud died trying to reach his sister in the UK travelling from Calais in the back of a lorry.

We have a duty to act to prevent more children disappearing into the hands of criminal gangs or dying because they've taken desperate risks to find someone to keep them safe.

Labour’s Alf Dubs was one of 10,000 children rescued from the Nazis through the Kindertransport and he is now calling on the Government to show the same compassion for refugee children in Europe today.

On Monday the House of Lords will vote on the Dubs amendment to act on Save the Children’s call for Britain to take 3,000 unaccompanied refugee children.

Britain didn't turn its back on child refugees in 1939 and we shouldn't today.

to refuse help and support unaccompanied children is un-British and immoral.

This Government initiative is poorly thought through and should be rejected. This is not generous and British and welcoming in a multi cultural society. R B

Why don’t they advertise for foster homes for these children

I am truly appalled that this will face any form of criticism. I am a secondary school History teacher and I am teaching my students about the Holocaust. I am always asked ‘but what was the UK doing?’ Sadly I have to tell them…very little. I know that in 10/20 years our children and grandchildren will be asking us what we did to help the enormous humanitarian crisis. They will look at images of helpless children, actively pushed aside by our government to pursue a political agenda and I will cry with them at the loss of humanity in this time. I implore our governing bodies to pursue a discourse of humanity and not fear.
