Having a say in how justice is being done is important for local people. That’s why I support getting offenders to pay back our community and improve the area. I visited Micklegate Methodist Church to see how the Community Payback scheme punishes people who break the law, gives people a say is how justice is done and how it can benefit to the local area. A group of seven offenders were repainting the Church’s main hall and rooms. These facilities are used by a local pensioners group and needed some improvements. I think it’s great that residents have the power...

We have a really strong sense of community sprit around here. Local people take part in great experiences thanks to our fantastic community groups. I recently presented Coalfields Regeneration Trust grants to some local groups. In projects ranging from sports and drama to training opportunities, the money will be used to fund activities that otherwise would have been impossible. It was great to meet Townsville Cricket Club, Carleton Glen Tenants and Residents Association and Kristina Gelder Theatre School who have all benefited from this extra investment....

Normanton is a great town with a really strong sense of community and history. But local people have told me they also want to see improvements and investment that will boost the town and support local jobs for the future. That’s why I was pleased to open the public meeting about Normanton regeneration, which was organised by the Council. Over forty residents shared their views and raised issues such as the future of the Carnegie Library, parking in the town centre and job and business opportunities around the motorway junction. It’s important local residents come forward with ideas about what...

Ever since the fire, I have worked closely with Carleton High because it’s important the school got help not just to rebuild the buildings hit by the fire but also to get great facilities throughout the new school. It was great to see the exciting new plans and talk to pupils and staff about what they want for their revamped school. The ideas being put forward look excellent. It’s clear that pupils, parents and staff have all played a part in shaping a new school which will be a real boost to Pontefract....

Like so many parents, I know that bringing up children is really rewarding but can be challenging too. That’s why it’s important there are Sure Start centres around here to help families give their children the best start in life I joined local families to pledge my support for the Shout Out for a Sure Start campaign to raise the profile of Children's Centres and make sure they continue to be funded properly. With 7 Children's Centres in Pontefract, Castleford and Knottingley, local mums and dads told me how they couldn’t do without the vital support, services and information...
