My letter to the P&C about the Bedroom Tax
Below you will find my letter today in the Pontefract and Castleford Express outlining my worries and opposition to the Government's Bedroom Tax.
In less than two weeks the Tories are bringing in the Bedroom tax. This is the most unfair tax on low paid and low income families since the poll tax. And it’s going to cause a crisis in this area.
Across the Five Towns, 2,500 families in Wakefield District Housing homes will be hit because the Government says they have too many bedrooms.
They will have to pay an extra £550 next year - and over £1,000 if they have two extra bedrooms and council tax benefit cuts too. And this is on top of other tax credit cuts so working families and the disabled will be really hard hit.
People can't even move house to avoid the charge. WDH has less than 100 smaller homes available right now for people to move into. Housing officers have told me it would take 7 years to re-house everyone.
Disabled couples who need separate bedrooms aren't allowed them. Separated couples with shared custody aren't both allowed a bedroom for the kids.
That means families are going to end up running up big debts or rent arrears, or losing their home. People who need urgent help should contact WDH for local advice on 0845 8 507 507 or email them directly at www.wdh.co.uk.
And it won't save the Government money either. If families end up in private sector rented housing or homeless that will cost the Government more.
This is a complete catastrophe for thousands of families in the district.
And it is appalling that at the same time as bringing in the Bedroom Tax, the Government is also giving thousands of millionaires a tax cut of £100,000 a year.
It’s time the Government helped local families who are working hard to make ends meet instead of millionaires.
