Councillors in Castleford have joined Yvette Cooper MP in calling for fairer business rates and more help for small businesses.
The call comes as the Pontefract and Castleford Express campaigns for the Government to change business rate rules to ease the burden on small and medium size companies after figures showed the average business rate rise on SME’s since 2010 was around £1500 per year.
Councillors Denise Jeffery and Richard Forster joined the MP on a town centre walkabout in Castleford where they spoke to several companies about the challenges they’ve been facing over the last few years.
Yvette Cooper MP said:
“It is so important that we support our small and independent businesses. They are a vital part of our local, they give us greater choice and that something a little bit special and we need to get behind them. But from what businesses are telling me, they’re still really struggling at the moment, despite what the Government is saying about the economy.
“That’s why I think we should cut business rates for small businesses. We can pay for it by scrapping the corporation tax cut for big businesses. They don’t need it, but the companies I’ve spoken to round here definitely do. And we can do more as well, by freezing energy prices until 2017 and sorting out the market, we can make things fairer and we can also open up the resources of the public sector, by increasing procurement from small businesses that will provide a real boost.”
Castleford Councillor Denise Jeffery added:
“These proposals are just what's needed for small businesses in Castleford and our new Business Forum will be discussing the issues next week.”
