The Boundary Commission have announced that they
will not reverse its decision to cut Wakefield’s representation
in Parliament - despite overwhelming local opposition to their
original proposals. They are pressing ahead with their
original plan to abolish and split up Normanton, with one
ward being moved into Pontefract and Castleford.

The Boundary Commission have reversed their decision to take Castleford out of our constituency name. It is very welcome that they have responded to our campaign to restore Castleford’s name. But it is outrageous that they haven’t listened to the thousands of local people who agreed with Assistant Commissioner that the area needs four constituencies.

The Boundary Commission may be independent. But the law still says they have to listen to local people’s views.

The Commission had already rejected the advice of their own Assistant Commissioner who recommended the retention of four parliamentary seats following a public inquiry held in the summer of 2005.

The announcement follows a further four month consultation period in which the Boundary Commission received over 150 letters from local people and petitions containing over 3,300 names opposing the reduction in Wakefield district’s representation. Of the total figure of 6392 submissions received by the Boundary Commission, only 17 approved of all or part of the recommendations.

I will be discussing next steps with local people, community groups and Wakefield Council and MPs. We all want to keep fighting to make sure that the Five Towns area does not lose representation in Parliament.

The Boundary Commission have announced
they plan to reduce Wakefield’s representation
in Parliament from four seats to three, making
our constituency one of the largest in the
country and wiping the name of Castleford
off the political map

Last summer, the Boundary Commission’s Assistant Commissioner Frances Patterson QC, carried out a two week long local inquiry to gather the views of local people on the proposed changes to reduce Wakefield’s number of Parliamentary seats. Many residents from across the district gave written and oral evidence.

Having seen all the evidence, she recommended that the four existing Wakefield constituencies should be maintained and Pontefract and Castleford should remain as it is.

But last month local people were shocked at the Boundary Commissions decision to overturn the recommendations of their own independent Assistant Commissioner and local people and plan to:

Cut the number of constituencies for the Wakefield district from 4 to 3.
Abolish the constituency of Normanton and divide it up between neighbouring seats.
Drop Castleford from our constituency name, creating a new constituency called Normanton and Pontefract.
Incorporate the whole of Altofts and Whitwood ward and Normanton ward creating one of the largest constituencies in the country.

I believe that this decision is astonishing. The Commissioner who heard all the local evidence argued we needed four seats in Wakefield, but her views have been overturned. Anyone who has looked at the evidence would agree that the Boundary Commission should reconsider their decision because:

The communities of Pontefract, Knottingley and Castleford have stronger ties including transport links, economic growth and regeneration, electoral history and local media outlets. In contrast, Normanton Town Council argued to the inquiry that Normanton looks much more towards Wakefield and should be linked to the communities to the north of Wakefield like Stanley and Wrenthorpe.
The proposed new constituency would be one of the largest in the country, with almost 80,000 constituents. That is considerably more than the national average. It seems absurd that as a result of this review local residents would be entitled to less representation in Westminster than the rest of the country.
It is outrageous for Castleford to be excluded from our constituency name. Castleford is the biggest town in the district outside Wakefield and must not be written off the electoral map.
