£400,000 extra cash for local roads
Yvette Cooper has welcomed new investment to plug local potholes. In last week’s Budget, the Chancellor announced a £1 million fund to repair roads damaged by the recent spell of bad weather. Freezing temperatures, snow and ice has had a huge impact on roads across the district. Wakefield Council has been given a ring – fenced sum of £397,500 to fix the damage and make sure local roads are in the best possible condition before next winter. This funding is on top of the Council’s plans to repair the roads. Yvette believes local roads should be as safe as possible. She supported plans to ensure utility companies repair roads properly after carrying out their work and backed trebling investment for local road maintenance over the past decade.
Yvette said: “The icy conditions this winter have made many of the local roads a complete nightmare. “Drivers across the area are desperate for the potholes to be sorted. Wakefield Council is already investing more. But it’s clear the exceptional weather means extra help was needed. “I discussed this with ministers and I’m delighted Wakefield has been given this support.”
